Still  Life  Paintings
Why I paint Still Life Paintings

Having lost my house in the 2017 wildfire, what I miss the most are the mementos that made up our lives, those little objects we collected as memories what we did and where we were in our life. It is those simple items that can come to mean so much. They should be celebrated. They remind us of the good times we had and the people we had them with.

I choose subject matter that is often overlooked by many of us who are busy when we don’t have to stop and see what we have or don’t have, or have done. I often make those still life items much larger than life so all the delicate and intricate detail is available for all to see. I am fascinated with the structure and symmetry of many natural and man made shapes as well as the diversity of shapes. Both also have the similar internal structure to make them strong.

I began to explore reflective surfaces and use that in most of my still life’s. Adding a reflective surface like a metal, glass, or polished stone gives an opportunity add a dimension and create a picture within a picture. Some paintings are actually a paradox.  The paintings appear to be in a space yet none exists, the objects appear to be on a table yet none is present, the objects appear solid yet no shadow is there.  These paintings have minimal objects and are at once simple yet complex.  Other paintings of objects on a simple reflective surface creating an opportunity to weave objects together in interesting ways.

My latest series of paintings focus on marbles.  Marbles are just fun colorful balls of glass and paint, but are great for playing with and collecting.  They have been a child’s favorite for many decades.  I have taken the simple marble and made them into large colorful orbs and raised them to art.
