Artist  statement:
Why I paint Landscapes

I have always been a morning person, and I have always used my time first thing in the morning to take in the
views and the vistas around me. This is when I first really noticed the effect of this specific light on the land.
This series of oil paintings focuses on the Golden Hours of Light. There are 2 times a day when the sun is in a
position to be called the Golden Hour. It is the time where the sun shines lowest in the sky and the light is at
its warmest and the shadows created are very soft. It is such a magical and calm time of day where there is
a pause between the night and the daytime hustle of life. It is a time to take in the first warmth of sunshine in
the morning or the last sunshine of the evening before the day turns to cool night.

I choose my locations to paint from my life. I love to hike and run so being out in the landscape is a normal
place for me to spend time. Sonoma County has great variety of landscapes from mountains to flat valleys to
sea shores. We are also in the wine business so being around vineyards is a very familiar place for me as
well. I like to visit a variety of locations or vineyards so I have the opportunity to take in many different
landscapes of the area we live in.

The locations I select are places that I have previously enjoyed visiting and that I can return to for reference
and refresh my thoughts. I take photographs because the golden light is so fleeting. It can change
dramatically in 5 minutes. The differences in the light can be seen in the soft golden light of the paintings
Sunset in the Vineyards and the intense light of First Light. I do very quick sketches and take notes. If
possible, I return to the same spot to create color sketches from the scene. I combine all these references I
have created to use for my final painting. Vistas can be breathtaking to take in as depicted in “The Long Run”.
It is my pleasure to capture it in paintings. I am endlessly enamored with the gorgeous vines and stunning
vistas as the new day’s light spreads across the terrain in front of me. My paintings capture what is a fleeting
moment in the day that many people haven’t had time to pause and reflect upon. I want to share these
locations because they are places, I can pause for a moment, take in the vistas and views, and to contemplate the day that is to come or the day that is done.
